Today, was the annual Kamloops Fish & Game ice fishing day for families, at Walloper Lake. This a beautiful, aerated lake, is located around 35km from Kamloops. The aim of the day, is geared towards introducing youth to the sport of ice fishing..
Marc & I volunteered on behalf of the KF&G, to help out where needed and of course, to take photographs of all the smiling little faces, proudly holding up a lovely rainbow!
What a tremendous day, topped off with some beautiful weather – blazing sun and blue skies made it almost impossible to wear gloves and the thick, padded jacket you thought would be necessary! Complimentary food was provided for the hungry anglers of all ages, including 120 Thompson River University students!
One funny, if slightly tense moment, was during the BIG group shot of the TRU students. Suddenly, a dull cracking sound and the feeling of a vibration through your feet became apparent, coming from the direction of the huge group of students, all grouped together on the ice for a photograph! Quickly followed by some screams and a moment of panic, until it was quickly realised that in fact, the ice was not giving way at all!! Had it done so though, I would’ve got some great shots of it!!!
It was absolutely brilliant to see so many youngsters enjoying ice fishing – many of them for the first time. It was lovely to see their different little characters and how they all reacted to certain things; The four year old little girl, having absolutely no qualms picking up the slimy, fishy fish and chasing her four year old friend, squeeling in terror at the thought of having to touch the fish! Over-hearing one dad, “I don’t think you should be putting your mittens in the water like that!” as his little boy held up dripping wet hands with a big grin on his face! The older boys, proud of their haul of numerous fish, coming to me and asking for their photograph to be taken, so as to prove their triumph!
It was a great day and we met so many lovely people of all ages. The KF&G volunteers worked incredibly hard in all areas, ensuring a smooth & successful event that I know will be repeated, in years to come!
